Training Education Participation for Work
TOPs4JOBs is a specialized offer from Jan Arends for youths who are high risk. This customer group cannot find work or find their place in the education system and may have behavior disorders, detention history or psychological / psychiatric problems. The TOPs4JOBs program aims to support and progress them towards work and/or school.
The social environment of the customer group is built into the training model to get the optimum result.
Structure and duration TOPs4JOBs
Training is 4 days a week and can last up to 26 weeks. During this time, the young adult will get targeted training where necessary, work in groups, receive individual counseling and secure work experience. There will be eight sessions per week, broken into four for English and Math, and individual guidance and training from the coach, the other four sessions are for daytime activities, including orientation for school/ work.
During their time on the provision they will work together towards a final product, that consists of a concrete objective that have been agreed by the group. Besides working towards their set goal, the trainer and coach will give a number of tasks and exercises, in which they will acquire new skills and learn to respond differently to social issues, during which they will start to discover their own skills.
A large percentage of TOPS training is based around the youth discovering their own competencies and their capabilities with regards towards school and/or work. They will discover if their chosen profession or studies are achievable, what are their job opportunities and what will/can they earn. All the results, experiences and opinions will lead to a solid choice and result. The following themes are important: collaboration, communication, decision making, negotiating and dealing with authority, competition and dealing with the feeling of being wronged. If the youth does not hold an initial formal qualification, the focus will be on this.
At-risk youth, ages 18 to 27 years old: young people with psychiatric and /or mentally challenged background, in combination with minor offences. Young people who feel that they have been wronged by the justice system and feel like they are being shut out. They find it difficult to deal with competition and the social expectations of their peers. And last but not least, they find it very difficult to accept authority and certain rules.
One plan, one approach, one goal: competent to school or to work
Our bespoke IT package TalentCompaz will be used to assess the capabilities, competencies and skills, mental and physical resilience of the customer. The trainer and coach run a joint program which is formulated and agreed with the customer. This plan will have goals that are clearly formulated, with timeframes for results.
We measure the attitude and progress of the youth before, during and after TOPs4JOBs. This is done by the University of Leiden, under supervision of Professor Peer van der Helm, the authority in this field and this target group, with the TOPS-A questionnaire. The TOPS -A questionnaire is an internationally accepted standard for identifying social problem behavior. University of Leiden uses the data for further research to improve TOPS. This eventually leads to an evidence-based tool for this target group.
TOPS is conducted by trainers from Jan Arends, who all have extensive and in-depth experience and knowledge of supervising youth at risk. They also all have at least the minimum certifications from one of the accredited behavioral interventions, So Cool and Tools4U.
The trainers are able to create a safe environment for young people, in which they can use and practice their acquired skills and try out new behavior. Trainers are constantly guided in intervision-and supervision meetings. The supervisors have years of experience in supervising trainers who work with youth that are at risk.
